Merida Events: Trova, Opera, Fiestas

This Week… starting January 31, 2011

The 469th Anniversary of the Founding of the City of Merida is over, but there are plenty of expat events to attend this week. There are meetups, dog walks, salsa lessons and a cocktail party, along with the beginning of a Cuban Film Festival and even a performance by the Symphony of Yucatan.

Municipal Fiestas This Week

Yucatan Living Dzilam Gonzalez Festival
According to the Mayor of Dzilam Gonzalez (the town inland from Dzilam Bravo), their Festival for 2011 is going to be the party of the year in Yucatan. If you want to join the festivities, you had better hurry because the party is already underway. The following are the remaining events in the annual Festival in Dzilam Gonzalez.

Monday (Jan. 31): Dancing to Alfredo & his Keyboards and Grupo Marino; plus, the third Run with Bulls from Rancho Las Cruces.

Thursday (Feb. 3): Procession of la Virgen de la Concepcion at 7:00 PM

Saturday (Feb. 5): Fourth Run with the Bulls at Rancho La Herradura, a night light and sound show, and music by the groups Armagedon and Androide.

Sunday (Feb. 6): Fifth Run with the Bulls at Rancho San Pedro Kulinche and, that night, a free dance with entertainment by The Kizahuas.

Monday (Feb. 7): A bullfight, plus a dancing surprise at night.

Tuesday (Feb. 8): A Charlie Chaplin film, with proceeds going to benefit the local church. In the afternoon: rides, sales of clothes and snacks, and activities for young cowboys.

Yucatan Living Kantunil Fiesta: January 31 through February 4.
This fiesta is in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria. The hallmark of this fiesta is its many religious and union processions. Kantunil is between Izamal, on the north, and Sotuta, on the south. According to the MileByMile map, the exit from the Merida to Cancun toll road (autopista de cuota) is a little under 40 miles from Merida. There is currently a big push on, by the Municipal Council in Kantunil, to improve the cultural experience of Fiesta de la Candelaria Yucatanchildren, with a focus on Mayan tradition, so this should be a trip everyone will enjoy.

Yucatan Living Tecoh Fiesta: February 2
This fiesta is in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria. If you look at a map of the Municipality of Merida, you will see Tecoh down at the far southeast edge. The artisans of this area excel in the areas of making machine embroidered huipiles, hemp hammocks, and woodcarving. Tecoh means “Place of the Puma” and most of the buildings in the town of Tecoh are built on top of pre-Columbian foundations. This is a great area that far too many tend to overlook.

Yucatan Living San Felipe Fiesta: February 5

This fiesta is in honor of San Felipe de Jesus. San Felipe is between Rio Lagartos and Dzilam de Bravo and is rapidly becoming quite a tourist destination. Any seafood you can think of can be found here and it is a great place to see waterfowl, turtles, and flamingos.

  1. Sorry, I forgot to hit notify me of reply. we’ll be in Merida on a tuesday evening and i’m wondering what the hours of music/dance are in el parque de santiago? thanks, carol

  2. The music and dance at Parque Santiago is every Tuesday evening and starts about 8 or 8:30 PM, depending. A big orchestra plays salsa, meringue, and other Latin dances. Its a lot of fun!
