It has been many years since my first visit to the beautiful city of Merida and the Yucatan but am hoping to come back in February of next year. Right now my prayers are with all of you that the hurricane loses strength and bypasses most of the land areas.

Everybody – please keep an eye on your radar and try to be safe. From what I can see, there are enough storms headed for the neck of our peninsula, from the Pacific, to push Dean “a little” to the north – which probably means a glancing blow for Yucatan. But a glancing blow from a Cat-4 or 5 is nothing to play with. After that, the change in course will probably save the northern Mexican and southern Texas coast by turning Dean toward the entire area between Houston and New Orleans. Having lived through over 100 tropical storms and 27 major hurricanes in that very area in my lifetime, “this ain’t gonna be nuthin nice.” Its too big and there’s no way to get away from it.

Great time to invite some folks over for a little house party!

You may think I'm kidding, but some people live in small, fairly weak houses. If you own a strong, thick-walled house in the city, it's a good place to be. With the colonial houses wall to wall, there's much less chance of damage than a stand-alone house.

Some of my Yucatecan friends gather in whoever has the strongest house. Bring all the food and hang out together.

Fortunately, today, the forecast has shifted a little and Dean may pass more to the north of Merida. Still going to be a lot of rain, probably wind.

I hope for all that the hurricane avoids the Yucatan but if it doesn't that all are safe. Ive had the displeasure of being in a Category 3 hurricane and still remember it clearly.

Casi - this is one of those times when you pray non-stop but keep working as if that's probably not gonna work. Wouldn't it be great if everybody laid in a week's supply of everything they need and then don't have to use it? Do it now - bad weather "fringes" could start as early as Sunday. Please think of pets, the elderly, and people who live alone and/or who don't have cars.
