This week, every city, town and village will be alive with Día de los Muertos activities, so feel free to wander through every part of the State of Yucatan, where you can expect to see wonderful altars, freshly decorated cemeteries and a people who very much know the value of bringing the best of the past into the future with them.

Yucatan Living Tribute to Dance: Swan Lake
This performance is by the students of Centro Estatal de Bellas Artes (the State Art Center), under the direction of Maestra Graciella Torres.

Yucatan Living Second Annual Merida IWC Halloween Party October 30
Costume and Dance Contests, Rock n’ Roll, FUSBOXX. Everyone is invited! Tickets include botanas, half a chicken or arrachera sandwich, fries, and a drink.

Day of the Death Activities in Merida Yucatan

Yucatan Living Merida: 2012 Altars of Hanal Pixan
The State of Yucatan, along with several different agencies, will present the 2012 Altars ofHanal Pixan in the Plaza Grande on October 31. That night, there will be a traditional procession of souls from Parque Santa Lucia to the Plaza Grande. The desfile (parade) will include regional actors dressing as catrinas and skeletons and performing a skit about death. Each year, between 75 and 100 altars are put on display at this event. Candles are lit, traditional foods are cooked and chants, prayers and litanies fill the air. Traditional huts are built and, for some, pens hold chickens and other farm animals. Look for the new Governor to honor the tradition of sampling the food at each and every altar.

Yucatan Living Bow Wow Palooza (Evolución’s Halloween Party)
The Shops at La Maison Bleue & Talented Bitches are holding a Howl-o-Ween Party for the Dogs of Evolución. The evening will include Comedy by Mel Blossom, music, local art, a costume contest, shopping, delicious food and drinks by Cafe Crème, Thai Flash and other local vendors. At the end of the party, everyone will be off to Hennessy’s Irish Pub to finish the evening in style!

Yucatan Living Last day to Submit Your Drawing or Photo
Submit photos and drawings at Costco from September 24 through October 31. Winners will be announced at the opening of the Bird-a-Thon on November 23rd at 7:00 PM at the Central Building of UADY (Calle 60 # 491-A x 56, Merida Centro. This contest is open to children, young people, the general public and specialized photographers. The main objective is to promote knowledge, appreciation and conservation of birds in Yucatan and, at the same time, to promote a local market for bird watching. Art Students Sale in Merida Yucatan

Yucatan Living Purpura Plastika Open House and Art Sale, Monday, November 5, 2012
You are cordially invited to visit Purpura Plastika at their first interactive center for art therapy and human development workshops and offices. They now have their own space to conduct their different workshops for children and adults.

Directions: Go north on Prolongation Paseo de Montejo to intersection of Calle 49 (Av. Camara de Comercio). Turn RIGHT (east) on CALLE 49; 7/11 on your right and Plaza Villas Hacienda on your left. Continue down Calle 49 until you can make a u-turn back onto Calle 49 at either Calle 36 or Calle 34. If you cannot make this u-turn, continue until you can go ’round the glorieta and return back to Calle 49. Stay on Calle 49 and turn RIGHT onto Calle 38 and go one block. White house is on the right corner of Calle 38 and Calle 47.

Ixil Farmers Market in Yucatan

Yucatan Living Mercado Campesino de Ixil (Ixil Farmer’s Market!): All Day: October 21, November 18, and December 16
This market is a joint project between Proyecto Itzaes, Rotary International, palo Alto Rotary, Club Rotario Nuevas Generaciones de Merida and the Town of Ixil, Yucatan. The purpose is to offer local and regional producers and artisans an alternative, local place to sell their products at better prices. This is a tents with tables and chairs kind of event with lots of fresh and prepared foods, local honey, arts and crafts, handmade clothing and much, much more. There will even be live music and pony rides.
Location: Getting there is easy. There are plenty of signs to guide your way from Chicxulub Pueblo.

Yucatan Living Feria Yucatan at Xmatkuil: November 9 through December 2
This year, there will be more than 1,000 exhibitors and 1,800 artistic, sporting, cultural and recreational events for all ages. The fair provides space for commercial and business activity, while maintaining a family atmosphere. The main attractions will be the rides, the Atayde Brothers Circus, the Robotic Zoo, the Dolphinarium, the Extreme Magic Show and 4-D films. Entrance to these attractions ranges from $10 to $15 pesos. There will be free shows in El Teatro del Pueblo, as well as events in Palenque, the Lienzo Charro, the Pista de Calificaciones and the Plaza Monumental.

Benefit Concert at Hacienda Ochil in Yucatan

  1. You led us astray with the Swan Lake which turned out not to be free. Or maybe it was free only for mexicans. The 60mn wouldn’t have been a problem but I’d gone with only 50 in my purse, thinking I wouldn’t need cash! Oh well, next time.
