Alberto Castillo’s Last Painting

Alberto Castillo Merida - Adoration of the MagiWhen we bought this painting, Adoration of the Magi, we were attending a benefit for the artist Alberto Castillo whose health and eyesight were failing. There was a time in Merida when every self-respecting art collector made sure that he or she had at least one or two of Castillo’s paintings. Castillo, a Yucatecan native, had studied art in Mexico City, rubbing elbows with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. But he had come home eventually, and sold his paintings to support himself. You can read more about Alberto Castillo here.

This painting was said to be the last painting he did before he really lost his sight. In fact, he saved the Baby Jesus’ face until last, and it shows.

The painting is large and looks great on a high-ceilinged wall in Merida… but we no longer have room for it. So we are putting it up for sale, to a good home.

The painting measures 1.4 meters (55 inches) across and 1.82 meters (71.5 inches) high. It is an oil painting and the measurements include the frame. It is signed by Alberto Castillo.

If you are interested in purchasing the painting, the price is $2000 USD. Shipping can be arranged. Please contact Ellen at ellen [dot] fields [at] gmail [dot] com.

Thank you!
