We've never heard of aduana (customs) keeping a dog... dogs don't go through customs. Or rather there is a special branch of customs that deals with live animals. We brought two cats through the Cancun airport. They had their international papers from the vet back home, and it only took about forty minutes to get everything done.

Still, the drive should take about two to three days. You need the same international form from the vet... any vet knows what that is. And when you come through the border, you should have no trouble as long as you have that.

Hola Jason and Miguel!
We live in Dallas Texas and will be taking a long vacation in Merida at the end of August.. I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some information about driving into Merida from Dallas... I have spent several hours trying to find out what kind of paper I will need but no luck yet... I will actually be taking a flight to Merida since we have a 2 month old baby..but my husband (does not speak any spanish.. ) needs t drive since we are taking our other baby.. the dog!.. we tried sending her by plane but the custom brokers in Merida will not release her the same day and want to keep her in a warehouse where she will surely die of a heart stroke so.. we just have to take the hard road..
any information would be greatly appreciate it
Thanks!

Try this place. I don't have any information other than what is on the page. If you're in town just go to parque las americas and you will see her house.

Dear Jason,
I am looking for a host family outside of the exchange programs, to visit Merida, study Spanish, and visit the Mayan ruins.
I cannot find anything outside of the educational institutions, and your story was inspiring.
If you have time, could you please respond with any suggestions or introductions to a family that is interested in hosting a visitor on a very tight budget.
Thank you,
Larry

I was the one who gave Jason a ride from Dallas to Mérida. I remember Jason was so determined to get to Mexico he did not want to sleep. I drove for a while, he drove for a while, for a long long while. I said Jason, we have to get some sleep, we are going to have to stop and get a room. Nooo! he said, I have no money, we are close....we most get to Mexico.
He did not have any money but he was sure determined to get where he wanted. I will always admire that.
Gary Walding met with us in Brownsville and the three of us took turns driving. Once in Mérida we took Jason under our wing at the Institute of Modern Spanish, gave him Spanish classes and placed him with a host family (Mimi) in exchange for redesigning our webpage.
Again Jason's determination was striking. He studied hard and learned Spanish while he worked day and night to make his best piece of art (our website). He made the best website a Spanish school could ask for (www.modernspanish.com). We have received so many good comments about our website, I can only say, thank you Jason. I truly wish you the best for you and your family.
