More good tree information for y'all:
There is a place you can go in Colonia Mexico here in Merida that will give you up to five trees for free. It's called Conafor and it's located on Calle 13 #129 at the corner of Calle 28 in Colonia Mexico. The phone number is 948-4864. Supposedly, you show your ID and they will give you up to five trees for free.

Now there's no excuse...go plant those trees!!

Not to scare anyone, but I had the anti-motines (is that the right word?) - riot police - show up on my block a while back. A full pickup load of police with those meter-long billy clubs - two in front and four in back. The crime? Someone had called about a drunk staggering down the street.

Aside from their fearsome appearance, nothing happened. They almost gently loaded the drunk in the back of the truck and hauled him away. The long nightsticks were ready, however, in case of trouble.

So, yes, public intoxication is not a good idea. Get falling down drunk at home, rather than in public. But watch out for those pasta floors. They are completely unforgiving.

Anyway, I wanted to post about the Reforestation. We gringos can help there too: take the time to learn about indigenous trees in the Yucatan and plant some of those on your property. Many are disappearing - being replaced by imported varieties. Aside from lots of shade, there are a variety of interesting flowers, forms (like the cross-shaped branches of the ceiba), and uses of the leaves and wood. And you will be helping native birds with habitat.

I suspect "public intoxication" would be a catch-all phrase for that one. The mood, concerning alcohol and irresponsible behavior, is not one you really want to toy with right now in any part of Yucatan. Just try to be safe and have a good time.
