"Why Mexico? Lebanese, Syrian & Iraqi Maronites searching for a Catholic country, with economic opportunities (particularly in Textiles & other mercantile areas where they had a competitive advantage)... after the Mexican Revolution, during The Great Depression & run up to World War II... Mexico was one of the few bright spots on the planet. Culturally the era is known as The Mexican Renaissance.... probably the single greatest period of Mexican creativity (although we are definitely in another such period currently)... in all the arts & cultural expression from Folk Music to Symphony, from Folk Art to Fine Art.... Film, Food, Architecture, Design, Industrial Expansion, Rising Standards of Living, Low Cost of Doing Business.... Mexico had everything at the time that the rest of the world didn't (including Argentina, Uruguay & Brazil which began their decline at that time." Source: Chowhound.com

Very interesting brief on the Lebanese Yucatecos. However, from a personal perspective, those with Lebanese ancestry married the middle and upper class caucasian (white) Yucateco/a not the indigenous Maya.

if i cross mexican border from arizona on my motorcycle & trailer, can i bring back 140 liters(35gallons) to u.s. in approved containers for my personal use without paying duty?? thanks in advance. and what is the max. liters or gallons you can bring back without paying duty? 50 gallons would get me 2200 miles (1 years worth).

Just wanted to ask if the drug cartel problems that are affecting the border regions are also affecting the yucatan area? I know in the past couple of years just from what we here in the US most of this has stayed towards the Pacific side and northern border areas of Mexico. Granted also the Carribean sea and the gulf, but you never hear anything about the Yucatan. Can someone enlighten me on this subject?

Thanks for discussing the topic of Lebanese in Mexico and Yucatan. Like all your articles, it was very interesting! I'm assuming the richest man in the world, Carlos Slim, is a product of the mass migration.

Speaking of Carlos Slim, any interesting news on Telmex (ticker symbol, TMX)? I continously invest in his company. I figure, if the richest man in the world is getting richer, I might as well hop on his bus and enjoy the ride too!

In regards to rising Gas Prices in the U.S; Gas continues to get more expensive every year and Oil Companies keep reporting record profits year after year. What to do? Invest in Oil Companies to earn extra income to offset the additional expense incurred due to rising gas prices. I've made much money investing with Exxon Mobil (ticker symbol XOM). If you can't beat them join them!
