Hola, Don! The steel bars are iron, actually, and are called protectores (protectors). They are a Latin tradition... you'll see them all over Latin America and Spain. In our experience, they allow you to open your windows while still keeping people, cats, dogs and flying debris out of your room. They were invented before there were screens, we're sure, and are a much more beautiful alternative. No, there is not a burglary problem in Merida... there are burglaries on occasion, but no more so here than any other city of over a million people... and probably less!

Hello,

We have become so fascinated with this area of Mexico but have yet to visit. If we could sell our house here in Florida we would probably move there tomorrow. I wanted to see if anyone could explain the reasoning of all the steel bars on the windows and doors; would I need to feel worried if my wife was alone for a couple of days or so if I traveled back to the states, is their a burglary problem? Most of the posts I have read talk about how safe it is.

Thank you
