Flycatcher Inn
1990 was a year of change. I was looking for a new home, both physically and spiritually, and I found it here.
There is a peace that has settled in this small glade, and it seeps into your soul. The loudest sounds I can hear are the bees humming in the tree blossoms and the hooting of the pygmy owl. The background music is crickets, cicadas, and birds. Doves coo and the jays rachet, fighting over the last bits of papaya.
I am sitting watching 6 jays, 5 brilliant orange orioles, blue buntings half plumed out looking as though they have blue measles, a peppershrike and a young chachalaca – all coming for water in my tiny "sarteneja" – a rock formation that holds water. They are maybe 10ft away.Yesterday it was a young oso hormiguero, an anteater, with its black sport t-shirt over his creme body. Drinking the sarteneja dry, the birds watching anxiously as the water level droped. They needn’t worry, I fill it every day.
Would you like to see these creatures? How about a Coati or a Tinamou? Then maybe you should come to stay at Owl’s House, our new rental cottage. Set on separate acreage back behind the Flycatcher Inn B&B, you are a world apart. On the edgeof 10 hectares, feel free to wander back into the woods. Climb the hill behind OH and see our chultuns. Visit our tiny ruin. Watch the birds, the stars, the wild flowering vines now turning the trees blue and purple.
Or do nothing. Have a beer, fix a margarita and chill out, recuperate. Regenerate your soul.
