i am living here and would like to know how i can sign up for the health care, i have been paying out of pocket and the costs have been the same as my co pays in the states. the care has been amazing the doctors i have had really care about the people they service, it is the way health care should be,

Great piece–My wife and I have been to Merida and Progreso 3 times and are planning a trip down after the 1st. We will be driving. Our intention is to retire in Merida very soon thereafter as retiring here is almost cost prohibitive. We will be looking for a reasonable rental for the 1st year and decide on housing from there. We look forward to an active yet relaxing lifestyle!

I love The Daily Show, following the 2008 presidential elections was very amusing.
I’m not sure what the deal is here … why is everyone so delighted to have been made fools of by “The Daily Show”? It’s all SATIRE! Do you really consider yourselves “American REFUGEES”? And what’s with them showcasing Reg, who’s not American, but Canadian … is he fleeing Canada’s health system too? And Carlos Cabrera is NOT A DOCTOR! He hasn’t finished his requirements to be a doctor. So there you have it: Americans being mocked on television … windowless tubes with little more than bottled water and Sandra Bullock movies to subsist on … wandering in the shadows … The joke is on Merida’s ex-pat community …
Well I did not find it funny at all, Americans always make fun of other peoples when they are different and have better things, As Yucateco living in the USA I can tell you that health care in Mexico and in particular in Yucatan is much better that in the States, Doctors are very well trained and treat their patients in a human way, In the States when you go to see the “Dr” most of the time you see a Nurse Practioner that of course Do not know as as Dr, Your insurance is being paid to see a Dr for christ sake and not a practioner. And course like that there are many many examples.

Dude, c’mon! You said it yourself, it’s a satire, and the joke is on the people who oppose a more humane healthcare system in the States, who curiously are the same who think everything is Mexico is wrong and America is country chosen by God himself (because they also think God is male). However, as a Yucateco living in Montréal, I’m sure Reg was only fleeing the 35cm snowstorms like the one is falling right about now. So Go Merida expats !!! One day I’ll be retiring to my old home! (and btw, my uncle’s house faces the park of Santiago!!! And Jon Stewart rocks! So do the Working Gringos!)

In response to the above comment by “Mark Santiago”, we would like to point out that Dr. Carlos Cabrera is a REAL doctor… he doesn’t just play one on TV. He graduated from the University of Yucatan Medical School here in Merida in 2007 and in 2008, he was released from his required social service.
I feel the video is an excellent, on-point, satire of the scandalous “know-nothings” who want to hermetically seal borders (which has never been accomplished anywhere by anyone in the history of the earth) and the great health care “debate” being controlled by insurance companies in the USA.
Everyone’s sense of humor is different.
Satire is not “real” — that is the point.

No-one is asking for borders to be hermetically sealed. That is just the feeble attempt of someone trying to reframe the debate on their own terms. All that is asked is that the laws of the respective countries are observed and upheld. There is nothing unusual in this – it is the norm throughout modern history and throughout the world. Incidentally, I see you have yet to respond to my question regarding the term íllegal invasion´in another comment thread (Driving and biking in Merida). Care to do so?

Our (household) focus is that the law should be applied to the rich first and foremost. Once they begin to obey the law, then we will worry about the poor.
If I wreck a car into a fire hydrant and tree, do I have the option to tell the police: No, I don’t want to talk to you about this. Just wait four or five days. No blood tests. No breathalyzers.
If I operate a large, messy, dangerous business and fabricate social security numbers, names and addresses to hire workers who don’t speak English or even Spanish, and expand my efforts to around 600 workers, who should go to jail?
In the US today, the 600 workers are torn from their children, charged with ID theft (what “theft?” their employer gave them IDs), imprisoned for 3 to 5 years, then deported. The CEO, the corporate treasurer, the corporate attorneys, the board of directors, the district managers? Not charged with anything, although they invented and put into practice the scheme, even going as far as having current workers bring ‘across’ more family members to fill my plant with cheap labor.
Some see brown people and become angry. We see the rich flaunt the law and never suffer the consequences. Bankers and regulators who took Trillions of taxpayer dollars still have their jobs, their enormous bonuses (some as much as $46,000 a day), their yachts, their country clubs. Where are our trillions? pocketed?
Those bankers should be in prison for life. Why aren’t they? Is it because they are white? rich? both?
I am not part of the Working Gringos, although I visit frequently. I visit for education, for the emotional tugs, for the incredible photography, calendar, fine writing.
I fail to see what driving/biking in Merida has to do with “illegal invasion.”
Enjoy life. Look less for poor scapegoats and look more at the real thieves in the night. Have a drink. Go for a stroll. Try to cleanse negative attitudes and enjoy the good that fills the earth. The hand of creation is everywhere!

Come on Santiago, The Daily Show is not making fools of anyone here. The only people they are making fools of are the fools in the States who refuse to believe that privitized health care as it is in the U.S. is just fine. I am visiting Merida for a month but I live in Canada. I’m an American though and I can tell you that I love my socialized health care system up there. I will not come home for the very reason that the American system is barbaric. Growing up in the States my parents always told me that despite the fact that they were both employed, with good jobs and good benifits, if somthing really bad were to happen they would lose everything in order to get through the cost of health care. In Canada I have had two kids, three or for emergencie room visits for me, two for my son and not a dime out of my pockets. If I lost my job it would’nt matter, I’m still covered. My Federal taxes are slightly higher, but i have no health care costs. Another thing, you guys down in the U.S. get dinged hard on property taxes. Mine are only 1200$ a year. So really your government and insurance companies still take more from you than the Canadian government takes from me. Come on guys get with it. You are one of the only few countrie that still has no socialized health care. You are not right and the rest of the world is wrong. Typical American way of thinking. realize your follies and get it together. Insurance companies have been ripping you off for years and they are getting more brazen about it. Think of it like you think of auto insurance. You pay and pay over the years. Suddenly you need it and they tell you that you have deductibles. Fine. Then they tell you that your payments will rise for the next few years. Fine. Then they tell you that due to previous claims, you are no longer insurable. In the end you pay them more than the cost of fixing the damages yourself. Its a scam, plain and simple.

First and foremost it was funny. I would hope people would find the irony of European Americans comming to Mexico and signing up for IMSS. A system they never have contributed to prior to arriving to Mexico. Yet they complain about the Mexican immigrant draining the health care in the USA. I actually would be fine with it except for how my brothers and sisters are treated up north. You round them up like animals, treat them with disrespect, and groups of young people beat them up and kill them and get away with it. I do not believe all European-Americans are that way but I cannot understand why the ones who do not agree with that kind of behavior are not outraged. Then you want us to welcome you to our country with open arms. I do not understand why it has to be that way.
