I so enjoyed this, thank you! We have extended our stay in Wyoming until Sept. 10th due to illness of the Chaplin that is replacing us. We are so anxious to be in Merida and Chuburna and to see our home.
Our prayers are always with you and yours,
Anita
Thanks so much for all you’ve published here about our hobby, pictures & video are just great,
Hope one of this days you’ll visit us at the monteSORRY RC Club behind Liverpool, we will soon have an event, where you’ ll be most welcome.
Txs again Gringos.

Wow! Civilization comes to the Yucatan.
Starbucks Coffee and now Model radio controlled aircraft. There is a saying in the USA. You know a small town is on the map if it has a McDonalds or a Walmart. Many of my friends still think of Mexico as 3rd world. Many are surprised to know Merida is a modern city. With many USA businesses. This is a great video!
Hello Carlos!
Actually radio controlled aircraft is not new here in Merida, it’s been around for 15 years or so. It wasn’t just cheap enough to become widespread.
I remember that in “Plaza Fiesta” used to be a toy store named “Juguetón”, and I would drool like a pig over the (electric) RC Airplanes sold there… and that was around 18 years ago…
Here’s a handy list of global businesses (from the top of my head) who have a strong presence and have 1 or more actual stores here in Merida:
- 2 Walmarts (one of which is a “SuperCenter”), and I believe there’s another one under construction, or so I was told…
- McDonnalds
- KFC
- Domino’s
- Pizza Hut
- Wendy’s
- Bennedetti’s
- Home Depot (Home Mart)
- Office Depot
- BMW
- Mercedes Benz
- Jaguar
- Hummer
- Porsche
- Audi
- Volvo
- Masseratti
- Alfa Romeo
- SAAB
- Land Rover
- Plus all the usual car brands (VW, Chevy, Ford, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, Dodge, etc etc etc, many of which have up to 5 or 6 dealers with big showrooms around town)
- Rolex
- Cartier
- We even used to have a JC Penney (in Plaza Dorada) but the franchise was adquired by Coppel, I believe…
For pete’s sake, I believe Japan Airlines has (or had) an office here on Avenida Colon by 62 (I’m pretty sure I saw the “letrero” a while ago).
That’s just from the top of my head, I’m pretty sure there are plenty I’m not mentioning.
A third world place… allow me to chuckle…
Dear Friends,
I wish I would have read this thread before. I am an avid aero modelist, and I joined the Too Fly event. But anyway… regarding your arguments above, from the top of my big head, here is my humble point of view:
What gives a city the title of first world class? A modern City? A great place to live? I believe it is its People, its Happiness, its Culture, Family, Security, Health, Traditions, Food, etc. And in my opinion, none of these come from what you guys mention above. Mérida, Yucatán has many of the features you can expect from A Great Place to Live.
Just to mention a few: We have plenty of Public sport facilities, sponsored by our government, where you can practice most sports, you name it. Several Olympic and Panamerican competitors have emerged from them. We have El Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán where you can learn and practice any kind of fine arts: music, poetry, drama, painting, sculpture, etc. And yes, we have huge cinemas where you can see all kind of movies… including some garbage produced by the North. We have several Science Research Institutes, a grate State University, countless archaeological sites from one of the greatest ancient civilizations: The Mayas. As well as Beautiful Haciendas now converted into Spas and Luxury Resorts.
Of course we still have a long way to go and have many gaps to fill as an evolving economy. But I’m sure we won’t fill them with all the McJunkfoods, Super Centers & Porsches. Its okay to have all these options in town, but as long as they don’t dismiss our own identity. With all respect for our northern neighbors, in the cities I have seen in The States (as an example of a first world country), there is nothing more to do than to spend the day shopping at the brand new mall, and ALL of them have exactly the same crap!!
I was born in Mexico City which is the largest city in the world with over 21 million people. I have also experienced living in USA, the AMWAY (American Way of Life) for several reasons, and believe me dudes, there is nothing I miss from it. I am proud of My City!
And also men! WE PARTY SOOO MUCHOO!!! Great restaurants, family weekend barbecues, all-u-can drink bars, night clubs, and yeah… all filled with beautiful gals! (and guys in case you are interested). A crazy Carnival, all year long sunny beaches… FUN, FUN, FUN. And finally the best of all: FOUR different R/C Model Airplane Clubs!!! Yeah men it’s a great city and a great hobby. But you know what makes it the best of all? The people I share it with! Most of them my very best friends ever!
I don’t own a fancy Hummer, or ever eat McBurgers (I would rather starve). Sometimes I shop at WALMART (WALterio MARTinez - my ‘hood liquor store) and that´s it.
I simply love, as it is, the MEYWAL (Mérida Yucatan Way of Life)!!!
LET’S KEEP FLYING YUCAS!!!
Ola, Working Gringa, I am from Morecambe UK, and used to live in your neck of the woods, Salinas area in California. What a super video! Well done! I also love the accompanying sound track, get down! I have a Yucatan Living icon on my Desktop and visit your site every day to see whats new. Your website is very informative, well written and makes me wish I can retire there sooner. I got 5 more years to go and trying to tuck away the sheckles to buy a home in Progreso. Keep up the good work Working Gringa, and I hope one day we will meet.
Hola, Greg. And thanks… but there’s no way I can take credit for this. Yes, I was there and I lent my voice to the soundtrack. But the creators of this video are none other than Working Gringo and Joseph, our excellent colleague here at Yucatan Living. They shot the footage and edited the video (and chose the soundtrack!). And yes, didn’t they do a great job?!?
We are all happy to know we’re bringing joy and light to a little corner of the UK!
